Holy Week in Review: Bishop travels the Diocese; faithful hear messages of hope
April 6, 2021 at 4:16 p.m.
In person and online, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., journeyed with his Diocese’s people during Holy Week, posing a question at the start of the Sacred Triduum that would remind the faithful just how much Christ sacrificed in the name of love.
“He knew that his hour had come,” the Bishop preached during the Mass of the Lord’s Supper he celebrated April 1 in St. David the King Church, Princeton Junction. “Can you imagine what must have been in his mind and in his heart that first Holy Thursday?”
That knowledge would live in the hearts of faithful Catholics from Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties as they celebrated the holiest time of the year in their parish communities and attended Mass in person or online with Bishop O’Connell.
From Palm Sunday to the Easter Vigil, Trenton’s shepherd visited five parishes in the Diocese, celebrating Mass, presiding over liturgy and administering the Sacraments to some of the Church’s newest members – all of which was livestreamed on diocesan media outlets.
Throughout the 98 parishes of the Diocese, more of the faithful were able to return to in-person Masses for Holy Week and Easter, a significant change from last year’s season when Masses could only be live streamed due to COVID concerns. Together with those who connected via livestream, hundreds of thousands of the faithful were able to participate in the Church’s commemoration of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus.
Diocesan media were on location for many of these faith-filled moments and have produced a collection of video, news reports and photo galleries from a cross-section of our local faith communities:
• Palm Sunday: Bishop O’Connell begins Holy Week in St. Paul Church, Princeton; Keansburg faithful celebrate in St. Ann Church
• Chrism Mass: Bishop preaches message of unity during Mass in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold
• Holy Thursday: Bishop visits St. David the King Church, Princeton Junction; Faithful return to St. Joseph Church, Millstone
• Good Friday: St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, with Bishop; Live Stations of the Cross outside Immaculate Conception Church, Trenton
• Easter Vigil: Bishop at St. Dominic Church, Brick; St. Mary, Barnegat, parishioners welcomed into the Church
• Easter Sunday: Joy of risen Christ in Holy Cross Church, Trenton
