Death of Msgr. Philip Lowery

In a communication to the Diocese’s priests, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., announced early on Thanksgiving morning from Rome that Msgr. Philip A. Lowery, long-time pastor of St. James Parish, Red Bank, died Nov 28.
Funeral services will be in St. James Church, 94 Broad Street, Red Bank. Visitation will be held on Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Vigil Mass being celebrated at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. Msgr. Lowery will be buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, 100 Chapel Hill Rd., Middletown.
Born Feb. 22, 1949, to Philip and Ella Lowery, Msgr. Lowery was raised in Jersey City. There, he attended Sacred Heart School and St. Mary School before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Holy Apostles College, Cromwell, Conn.
Msgr. Lowery completed his preparation for the priesthood in Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md., and was ordained May 22, 1976, by Bishop George W. Ahr in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton.
He was assigned to St. Joseph Parish, Toms River, on June 11, 1976, and remained there for more than 10 years. He spent two months as temporary administrator of the parish in 1987 before being assigned to St. Barnabas Parish, Bayville, as associate pastor, and also served on the Council of Priests and diocesan College of Consultors.
On July 27, 1990, Msgr. Lowery was named temporary administrator of St. James Parish, Red Bank, and was installed as pastor later that year. He continued to serve as pastor of St. James and as director of Red Bank Catholic High School until the time of his death. On April 11, 1997, he was named Prelate of Honor of his Holiness with the title of monsignor. He was also chaplain of the New Jersey State Police.
