If the prayers of students at Trenton Catholic Academy are answered, world peace may be just a little bit closer.

In honor of the 2009 International Day of Peace Sept. 21, more than 500 students of Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, showed their dedication to bringing about peace in the world. Peace Day, established by the United Nations in 1981, is an international celebration during which individuals, organizations or communities participate in practical acts to promote an end to violence.

The morning began with a prayer service for all students from kindergarten through 12th grade, after which students in the Lower School flocked to the lawn to plant pinwheels that they had made. The activity was part of the Pinwheels for Peace project, a program created in 2005 as an artistic public statement for peace. In 2008, two million pinwheels were planted around the world on Peace Day.

Students in TCA’s Upper School marked the day by hanging origami paper cranes in the school. Following the Japanese custom that wishes are granted to those who make 1,000 origami cranes, the students made 1,000 cranes to hang throughout the school while wishing for peace.
