STATEMENT OF BISHOP DAVID M. O'CONNELL, C.M., ON THE APPOINTMENT OF ARCHBSHOP HEBDA AS COADJUTOR OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
It is a real joy to welcome Archbishop Bernard Hebda to the province of New Jersey as the Coadjutor Archbishop of Newark. He will be a wonderful addition to the New Jersey Catholic Conference, to the clergy, religious and faithful of Newark and to the life of the Church in our region.
Archbishop Hebda brings with him a wealth of talent and experience, both nationally and internationally, that will be of tremendous support to Archbishop John Myers as he shepherds the Archdiocese of Newark. I was fortunate to get to know him during our time together in Rome in 2010 when all new bishops consecrated that year gathered together to meet with His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and other officials of the Roman Curia. He is blessed with a warm and gracious personality and a great sense of humor that the people of Newark will come quickly to enjoy.
Archbishop Hebda's episcopal motto "Only Jesus" provides an insight into his understanding of the primary role of a bishop in the Catholic Church: to lead his people to the Lord Jesus Christ.
