Sister Mary Jeremiah Roche, served in Keansburg school

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 12 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Jeremiah Roche, who died March 7. She was 95.

Sister Mary Jeremiah entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1934 and held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Georgian Court College, Lakewood.

Sister Mary Jeremiah’s years of ministry were primarily in schools in the Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses including St. Ann School, Keansburg.

She retired in 1990, and spent her time in the convent of St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral, Metuchen, where she continued tutoring and her ministry of prayer and hospitality.

Sister Mary Jeremiah was the recipient of an “Award for Excellence” in teaching given by the Diocese of Metuchen and she was also awarded the prestigious “Regina Nostra Medal for outstanding service to God and his people” by the now late Bishop Vincent DePaul Breen.

Sister Mary Jeremiah is survived by many cousins, friends and Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic community.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community at Mount St. Mary, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
