A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 13 in St. Catherine of Siena Chapel in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Gail Nolan who died Nov. 9. She was 74.

Born in Trenton, the former Sister Mary John Vianney entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Rose of Lima Parish, Freehold, Sept. 8, 1956. She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Georgian Court College (now University) in 1969; a master’s degree in religious education from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1976, and another master’s degree in social work from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1994.

Sister Mary Gail served as a teacher, parish director of religious education and social service professional in the dioceses of Camden, Metuchen and Trenton. In the Trenton Diocese, she ministered as a teacher in St. James School, Red Bank, from 1970-1971, and was a director of religious education in St. Paul Parish, Princeton, from 1971-1976 and St. Gabriel Parish, Marlboro, from 1977-1990. She was also a member of the professional staff of Catholic Charities in Ocean County, and was a therapist in St. Barnabas Behavioral Health Center, Toms River, from 1996-2006. Until her retirement in 2010, she worked in the nursery school in St. Catherine Parish, Farmingdale.

Burial was in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 U.S. Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
