A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 13 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center for Mercy Sister Mary Denise O’Boyle who died April 10. She was 89.

Born in Philadelphia and given the baptismal name Rita, Sister Mary Denise grew up in Atlantic City and attended St. Peter School, Pleasantville, and Holy Spirit High School, Atlantic City. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 and was professed in 1952. She earned degrees in elementary education from Georgian Court College (now University), Lakewood, and in reading from Seton Hall University, South Orange.

Her teaching assignments in the Trenton Diocese included St. Joseph School, Keyport, for 11 years, and Red Bank Catholic High School where she served as a remedial reading teacher. She was named principal of St. James School, Red Bank, and then later transferred to Holy Family School, Hazlet, where she was an intermediate grade teacher and then became librarian and CCD coordinator. She completed her time in Hazlet as a liturgical and mission coordinator in Holy Family Parish.

Sister Mary Denise spent her retirement in St. James Convent, Red Bank, before moving to McAuley Hall Health Care Center. She is survived by a sister and many nieces, nephews and members of her religious community.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
