Sister Mary Christina Geis, GCU professor emeritus

Sister Mary Christina Geis, a professed Sister of Mercy for 80 years and professor emeritus of art in Georgian Court University, Lakewood, died April 13 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung. She was 95.
Born in Woodbridge, Sister Mary Christina entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1935 and for 23 years taught in schools including Immaculate Conception School, Camden, and St. Elizabeth School, Bernardsville. She earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from then Georgian Court College and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Her postgraduate study includes course work in the New York Phoenix School of Design at the Pratt Institute and the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London.
During her 49 years teaching in Georgian Court University, she traveled to the University of Florence, Italy, where she studied art history. She also produced an extensive range of art that included murals, portraits, fine lettering, oils and watercolors and she provided visiting artists and students the opportunity to display their work in the gallery of the art department. It was because of this, the gallery was named in her honor.
Sister Mary Christina was known for her dedicated work in bringing about the restoration and upkeep of the National Historic Landmark Campus of Georgian Court. She also wrote a detailed book, “Georgian Court: An Estate of the Gilded Age,” which depicts the rich art and social history of the George Jay Gould Estate.
In 2001, she was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by Georgian Court Univeristy.
Sister Mary Christina is survived by a sister, Mercy Sister Mary Geis of Watchung; two brothers, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and Sisters in the mid-Atlantic community.
Funeral services were held April 16 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center. Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
A memorial Mass for Sister Mary Christina was to have been celebrated April 22 at noon in the Dorothy Marron University Community Chapel on the campus of Georgian Court University.
