Sister M. Daniel Schroeder, a founding sister of Notre Dame H. S.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 3 in St. Catherine of Siena Chapel in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Daniel Schroeder who died March 29 at age 86. In addition to serving in the music ministry as a teacher and parish pastoral music director, she was also one of the 12 Sisters of Mercy who founded Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, more than 50 years ago.
Born in Easton, Pa., Sister Mary Daniel entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1943. She received a bachelor’s degree from Georgian Court College, Lakewood, and a master’s degree in music education from Boston University. She continued her studies in Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart; Pius X School of Liturgical Music, Purchase, N.Y., and in Westminster Choir College, Princeton.
Sister Mary Daniel taught music in several New Jersey schools including Notre Dame High School, Lawrenceville, as well as in St. James, Woodbridge; Mount St. Mary Academy, Watchung, and Phillipsburg Catholic High School, Phillipsburg. She also served as a pastoral music director in parishes in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Michigan, including St. Joan of Arc Parish, Marlton, in the Trenton Diocese.
Following her retirement, she volunteered with the music ministry in Mount St. Mary, the Sisters of Mercy motherhouse in Watchung, where she worked on the “Catherine’s Legacy” initiative with fellow sister and good friend, Mercy Sister Judy Ward. “Catherine’s Legacy” is the title of a project started by Sister Judy who designs and prints greeting and seasonal cards as well as remembrance cards with artwork featuring Sister Catherine McAuley, founder of the Sisters of Mercy as well as members of the Sisters of Mercy community.
Sister Mary Daniel is survived by her cousin, Carmelite Sister Lucille LaMontagne from Hudson, Wisc., friends and members of the Sisters of Mercy community.
Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
