Robert Swift, father of Holmdel pastor

Father Daniel F. Swift, pastor of St. Benedict Parish, Holmdel, was principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial Dec. 2 in St. Joan of Arc Church, Marlton, for his father, Robert Swift, who died Nov. 28 following a brief illness.

Mr. Swift was born in South Philadelphia in 1930 and was a graduate of South Philadelphia High School. Soon after he and his wife of 57 years, Nancy, Emig Swift, were married in St. Aloysius Church, South Philadelphia, they relocated to Marlton.

Mr. Swift had a long-term career as grocery store manager and eventually became a store manager of Penn Fruits Supermarkets in the greater Philadelphia area. Later, he and his wife purchased a small business and were distributors for Pepperidge Farms Breads and Rolls. Mr. Swift went on to be employed as a warehouse manager by Radio Corporation of America, Moorestown, and eventually retired from that position under the Martin Marietta Corporation.

In St. Joan of Arc Parish, where Mr. Swift was a longtime parishioner, he served as treasurer of the school PTA; was a member of the parish council, and was active with the parish’s annual summer carnival which was started in the 1970s.

Mr. Swift was predeceased by his grandson, Geoffrey, who died in 2001.

In addition to his wife and Father Swift, Mr. Swift is survived by children, Maj. Robert A. Swift, USAF (ret.) of Manahawkin; Dr. Joanne (Dr. Mark J.) Swift Hummel of Marlton, and Dr. Timothy (Colleen Rogers Swift) of Holland, Pa.; six grandchildren, Katherine E., Madeline M. and Danielle C. of Marlton; Gregory Swift of Marlton, and Robert J. and John R. of Holland, Pa.

Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Mount Holly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joan  of Arc School, 101 Evans Rd., Marlton, N.J. 08053 or Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice, 5 Eves Dr., Suite 300, Marlton, N.J. 08053.
