Questions on canon law to be focus of R.C.I.A. team training

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

The diocesan Department of Evangelization and Catechesis will sponsor a training workshop on Common Canonical Issues Aug. 13 in St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Freehold.

The workshop will be offered in Spanish and English with the session in Spanish being presented by Father Javier Diaz, pastor of Christ the King Parish, Long Branch, from 9 a.m. to noon. The session in English will be presented by Msgr. John K. Dermond, former diocesan judicial vicar, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Steve Bulvanoski, diocesan Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults coordinator, said the workshop is designed for persons who serve on parish RCIA teams including catechists, leaders and other members.

“The people in these ministries meet countless different people each with their own unique religious histories,” which include non-baptized people, baptized non-Catholics, Eastern non-Catholics, uncatechized Catholics as well as others with doubtful Baptisms, some single, others in valid marriages and invalid marriages.

“Through the lens of canon law, the presenters will provide a better understanding on how each of these individuals they encounter can best move forward in the Catholic tradition in general and through the RCIA process in particular,” Bulvanoski said.

Registration fee is $10 per person and includes light breakfast for the morning session and a light lunch for the afternoon session. Make checks payable to Diocese of Trenton and send to the Department of Evangelization and Catechesis, Diocese of Trenton, 701 Lawrenceville Rd., Lawrenceville, N.J. 08648. ATTN: Doreen Gallway. Deadline to register is Aug. 5.

His assignments over the years have included serving in a number of parishes around the Diocese as pastor and parochial vicar, and for 33 years, he was diocesan judicial vicar. He is currently retired and assisting in the Office of Canonical Services and the Tribunal.

A native of Colombia, Father Diaz pursued studies for the priesthood in Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md. He was ordained a priest May 16, 1998 in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral by Bishop John M. Smith. His assignments since ordination have included serving as parochial vicar of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral and St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Hightstown, and as pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Trenton. Just before arriving to his current assignment as pastor of Christ the King Parish, Long Branch, where he is pastor, Father Diaz spent several years studying canon law in Santa Croce University in Rome.
