Planning a Legacy: Diocesan seminars provide insight
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
What do you want to be remembered for and who do you want to remember?
These questions often come up in discussions about legacies, said Barbara Warner, diocesan director of planned giving.
“Leaving a lasting imprint upon the world is a common human goal,” Warner said. “Each of us would like to be remembered for the good things we have done in our lives.
“Our accomplishments, our contributions to society and our children are just a few of the legacies that we eventually leave behind.”
She noted that as Catholics, we are also called to pass along an even greater inheritance – the legacy of faith that we have received. “Due to the generosity and support of Catholics throughout time, our Church has been able to continue professing the mission Jesus left for us,” she said.
Knowing that Catholics think about their legacies and supporting their parishes, the Trenton Diocese, in conjunction with parishes throughout the four counties, is hosting Planned Giving Seminars, said Warner, a certified planned giving officer.
Professionals in the financial and legal field are volunteering their time to share their expertise on a host of related topics including: how to evaluate assets, the importance of having a will and the best ways to transfer assets to loved ones and charities.
“There will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn how you can gift your assets to those you love wisely and beneficially,” she said.
“It’s important for us to have our estate in order, no matter how large or how small it may be. For some, it may mean knowing what assets you have in order to plan for the future.
“For others, it means knowing what assets you have in order to disperse them as you wish without losing a great percent to estate and inheritance tax,” she said. “For others, it may just be for peace of mind.
“In these present financial times, reviewing one’s finances with an eye to enhancing the legacy you want to leave and improving your own finances can lead to a peaceful solution,” she said.
The next seminar will be Wednesday, May 19 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish, Lavallette. There is no cost for attending but reservations are requested. Please call Warner at 609-406-7400, ext. 5632 to reserve a seat.
