Judges from the Pro Spirit Association assessed the female competitors points based on criteria such as emotion and technique; jumps and tumbling; partners structures and pyramids; spirit and showmanship; choreography and originality, and crowd appeal. In the junior varsity division, consisting of girls in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, Our Lady of Sorrows School squeaked out a win over Holy Family School, Lakewood, by a point total of 224.5 to 223.
The varsity division, consisting of girls in the seventh and eighth grades, was led by Our Lady of Sorrows with a tournament-high score of 237.5 points.
The “Miss Yell” individual competition featured girls who combined music and cheering talents to inspire the crowd. The winner in the junior varsity division was Emilie Hendrickson of Incarnation-St. James School, Ewing; Lianna Rossi of Our Lady of Sorrows won the competition in the varsity level.
The Our Lady of Sorrows cheerleading success might well be attributed to the Weiger family dynasty, which has spilled over into other teams. Mother Karlyn and her daughter Amelia coach for Our Lady of Sorrows, while another daughter, Melanie, works with the IncarnationSt. James Varsity girls.
The day also featured a crowdpleasing exhibition by pee wee cheerleaders from St. Gregory the Great School. Proving girls are never too young to show team spirit, coach Jayne Thomas led her enthusiastic group of second and third graders in a special performance that hinted at the school’s ongoing success.[[In-content Ad]]
