Mercy Sister Catherine McCarthy, dies at 83

Sister Catherine (formerly Sister Mary Carleen) was a native of St. Joseph Parish, North Plainfield, and was a graduate of the parish grammar school and Mount St. Mary Academy, Watchung.

Sister Catherine entered the Sisters of Mercy Sept. 8, 1949, and made her perpetual vows March 9, 1955. She held a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Georgian Court College (now Georgian Court University), Lakewood.

Sister Catherine’s teaching experience included two schools in the Diocese of Trenton – St. Ann, Keansburg, from 1951-1956, and St. Joseph, Trenton, from 1958-1960. She also taught in schools that are now part of the Diocese of Metuchen.

Sister Catherine was survived by her sister, Mercy Sister Mary Theresa McCarthy, professor emeritus at Georgian Court University; a brother, Charles (Charlotte) of Point Pleasant, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Burial was in St. Gertrude Cemetery, Colonia.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 U.S. Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
