A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 21 in St. Charles Borromeo Church, Cinnaminson, for parishioner Marie Agnes Berger who died Jan. 17. Ms. Berger was active in the parish nursing ministry and was an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion.

Born and raised in Pennsauken, Ms. Berger graduated from Misericordia Nursing School, Philadelphia. She received a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration from Stockton University. She worked in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Camden, for 61 years as a registered nurse and supervisor of surgery for 26 years. Beginning in 1950, she was hired as the hospital’s first operating nurse. She was instrumental in the start of kidney transplant and open-heart surgery programs in the 1970s, the introduction of laparoscopic techniques and the adoption of the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, which offers minimally invasive options for major surgeries.

In January, 2011, the Catholic Health East board of directors and sponsors council honored Ms. Berger for her years of dedicated service. A scholarship in her honor was established earlier, given for excellence in perioperative nursing in Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing.

Burial was in Calvary Mausoleum, Cherry Hill.
