It had been 13 years since the Holy Cross wrestling team was able to hoist a District 26 trophy and, when the Lancers finally returned to the winner’s circle Saturday they did it with style.

Not only did the Delran-based school produce five district champions, it moved a school-record nine wrestlers on to the Region 7 tournament while senior 220-pounder Matt Correnti etched his name into the record books.

In pinning Burlington Township’s Cadrick Augustin in the semifinals, Correnti became the winningest wrestler in Burlington County history with his 154th career victory. He followed with a technical fall over Delran’s Devin Rolon to win his fourth district crown.

“Matt has had an amazing career,” said Lancers coach Adam Cooney, whose program won a district team title for the first time since 2003. “He has accomplished almost everything there is. He has been the face of our program for four years and our leader.”

Early in his career, Correnti did not have many teammates to celebrate with at districts as the Lancers have slowly been building up to this season. Holy Cross (11-10) also reached the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association South Jersey Non-Public B finals before losing to Holy Spirit.

“It was great for all of our guys to have a championship to celebrate together,” Cooney said. “A team championship is special because it belongs to everyone. Everyone had a hand in getting it done and everyone can take ownership of it.”

Holy Cross amassed 189.5 points to outdistance Cinnaminson by 33.5 points. Also winning individual titles were 106-pounder Chase Mullarkey, 132-pounder Robert Rodolico, 152-pounder Avery Dinardi and 160-pounder Cam Wasson.

“Chase Mullarkey wrestled well and had a tough opponent in the finals,” Cooney said. “Chase is extremely talented and I think the finals was a huge corner he turned by winning his first major tournament.”

Rodolico appears to be peaking and “looks his best at the end of the season,” according to Cooney. “We are very excited about the rest of his post season.”

DiNardi’s pin in the finals put his record at 19-1 this year.

“He is having a fantastic season,” Cooney said. “When he is wrestling well he is tough for anyone to stop and we feel he is wrestling his best right now.

“Cam Wasson also wrestled extremely well. Cam has flown under the radar this season, but we feel he is a contender at the Region 7 tournament.”

And then there is Correnti, who is undefeated entering the regions. The senior is a man on a mission after being upset in last year’s state finals.

“Matt had a good tournament but more importantly was a solid leader in preparing our team for this tournament,” Cooney said. “Matt's loss in the finals last year was devastating, but he has found a way to make it a positive. He has used it as motivation and a learning experience.”

Also reaching the finals was 113-pounder Connor Mullarkey, who finished second after losing to Bordentown’s Billy Moore. Others to get through to regions by winning their third-place consolation bouts were 138-pounder Beau Bruneau, 145-pounder Troy Longley and 285-pouner Bobby Cristella.

Together they combined to get what they were looking for.

“Winning the districts was at the top of our goals list as a team,” Cooney said. “We have several guys on our team that have experienced a ton of individual successes but not many as a team.  A team championship is very special and I am sure all of our guys will remember it for a long time.”

It also helped take away the sting of the SJ Non-Public B loss.

“Coming into the season the expectations were high,” Cooney said. “We returned a lot of talented guys and we expected to do well as a team.  Coming up short in the sectional final was a huge disappointment, but I think it brought us together and refocused us for districts.”

The coach had special praise for his small but valuable senior class.

“We have four seniors on our team,” he said. “This has been the culmination of all that senior class’s hard work. There is a solid group of younger guys top take the torch from them, but our senior class will be missed.”
