The Holy Cross Center of Learning will begin its 40th year Sept. 7 with a Mass for all students, faculty members, parents, guardians and friends at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, a worship site of Divine Mercy Parish, Trenton. The Mass will be followed by a luncheon to be held in the cafeteria of the former Holy Cross School.
The Holy Cross Center of Learning was organized in 1974 under the auspices of the Mercer County Chapter, Holy Innocents Society, Federation of Holy Innocents Societies and operates a special religious education program.
Established with the explicit intention of developing an awareness of Christ’s life in each person with intellectual, cognitive and/or developmental disabilities, the center accepts students age seven and older, who are autistic, blind, emotionally or physically challenged, neurologically impaired or learning disabled and are not able to function in a regular religious education program.
The center provides religion classes, Mass, music, prayer services, recitation of the Rosary, workshops and parties for students on Saturday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., September through the middle of May. Religion classes consist of preparation for the reception of sacraments as well as courses in continuing religious education including Mass and Scripture study. Altar server instruction is also provided.
The center is staffed entirely by volunteers and is sponsored by the Trenton Council, Knights of Columbus, and is supported by other Knights of Columbus councils as well as area service organizations and individuals. Angelo J. Romanello is the administrator of the Holy Cross Center of Learning and Rose Anna L. Romanello is the coordinator.
During the 2012-2013 school year, two students received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and two students received first holy Communion. For the 2013-2014 school year, it is anticipated that two students will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and six will receive Confirmation. The center’s oldest student last year was 58.
Volunteer aides are also needed to assist the students in the classroom and during other activities. Any person 13 years of age and older desiring to volunteer their services are welcome.
For information on enrolling a child or adult in the Holy Cross Center of Learning or to learn more about volunteer opportunities should call Rose Anna Romanello at 609-882-4567.
