Funeral services set for Sister Mary Gloria Jones, Trenton native


A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated March 12 at 10:30 a.m. in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Gloria Jones who died March 8. She was 93.

As a young child she lived in New York City before her family moved to Trenton where she attended St. Anthony Grammar School, Hamilton, and Cathedral High School, Trenton. In 1945, Sister Gloria entered the Sisters of Mercy in Watchung and kept her baptismal name. She continued her education in Georgian Court College (now University), Lakewood, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She taught for the next 50 years in parish elementary schools in the Camden, Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses. In the Trenton Diocese, the schools included St. Paul, Princeton.

When she retired from teaching in 1996, Sister Gloria lived in St. James Convent in Red Bank and 2012, Sister Gloria moved to McAuley Hall Health Care Center.

Sister Gloria is survived by her three nephews and two cousins.

Visitation will take place March 12 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. with a “Welcome Home” at 9:45.

Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22 West, Watchung, N.J.  07069.
