A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 23 in St. Catharine of Siena Church, Seaside Park, for Deacon Stephen R. Vagrin who died April 17. He was 70.

Deacon Vagrin was born in New York City and raised in Fords. He received an undergraduate degree from Mount St. Mary University, Emmitsburg, Md., and a graduate degree from Seton Hall University, South Orange.

For 38 years, he taught history and economics in John F. Kennedy High School, Iselin. He was ordained a deacon May 10, 2003, in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, by Bishop John M. Smith. After he retired, he and his wife, Barbara, moved from their home in Princeton Junction to Seaside Park and he began ministering as a deacon in St. Catherine of Siena Church, where he was the moderator of the altar-rosary society, director of the RCIA, coordinator of the altar server, chairperson of the pastoral council and a member of the parish finance committee.

Deacon Vagrin was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Helen Vagrin, and his wife, Barbara, who died in 2006. He is survived by three children, Laurie Ann, Marc and Karyn and her husband, Magnus; five grandchildren; one brother, and one sister.

Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Catharine of Siena Parish, 50 “E” Street, Seaside Park, 08752.
