Funeral arrangements for Father William J. Nolan, longtime pastor of St. Justin Parish

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., will be principal celebrant and homilist of a Mass of Christian Burial Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. in St. Justin Church, Toms River, for Father William J. Nolan, who died Dec. 18.
Father Nolan served as pastor of St. Justin Parish for 24 years, from 1982 to 2006.
Father Nolan was born in 1939 in Boston. He attended Don Bosco College, Newton, N.J.; Salesian Theological Seminary, Benedikat Beuern, Germany; and Josephinium Seminary, Worthington, Ohio.
He was ordained a priest for the Salesians of St. John Bosco community May 17, 1969 in Columbus, Ohio by Bishop Clarence Elwell.
In 1972, Father Nolan left the Salesian community to begin his ministry in the Diocese of Trenton. He was assigned as associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Toms River, where he served from 1972 to 1973. Other assignments as associate pastor were St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Old Bridge (now the Diocese of Metuchen), from 1973 to 1976; St. Rose Parish, Belmar, from 1976 to 1979, and St. Mary Parish, New Monmouth, from 1979 to 1982, when he was named pastor of St. Justin Parish.
Because of health reasons, Father Nolan resigned as pastor of St. Justin Parish in 2006, then he retired from active ministry Aug. 15, 2009.
Other positions he has held in the diocese included the executive board of the Priests’ Senate, moderator of the Ocean County Holy Innocents Society and dean of the Southern Ocean Deanery.
Father Nolan’s body will be received in St. Justin Church, 975 Fischer Boulevard, Toms River, Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. and viewing hours will continue until 7:30 p.m. at which time there will be a Vigil Service.
The following day, Dec. 29, a viewing hour will be held from 9 to 10 a.m., at which time the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Toms River.
