July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M.

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., will be the keynote speaker during the seventh annual Good Counsel Homes-South Jersey fundraising banquet scheduled for Oct. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Lucien’s Manor, 81 White Horse Pike (Route 30), Berlin.

Proceeds from the banquet will benefit Good Counsel Home-South Jersey, which is located in Riverside and provides assistance to single, homeless pregnant women and their children. Good Counsel Home-South Jersey operates round-the-clock with a staff comprised of a house manager, case manager, seven full-time residential advisors, one full-time care staff, two part-time residential advisors and a core of 10 to 15 volunteers who help with caring for the children.

JoAnn DiNoia, who serves on the Good Counsel Homes-South Jersey staff and works with development and fundraising, noted that, in the past year, the home was “blessed” to welcome 13 new babies in 2012. Currently in residence are 10 mothers, five babies and two toddlers. The backgrounds of the mothers vary from three who are pursuing their high school equivalency diplomas, one who is pursuing real estate certification, a pharmaceutical assistant, a sales representative and part-time dental assistant.

The annual banquet is Good Counsel-South Jersey’s principal fundraiser, DiNoia said, noting that $500,000 is needed each year for operating expenses.

“Our banquet attendees have been and continue to be supportive – prayerfully and financially,” said DiNoia.

Cost to attend the banquet is free, but free-will donations will be collected. There is general seating, but tables of 10 may be reserved. For reservations, call Therese Garbert at 856-829-2918 or [email protected].
