A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 8 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Kathleen Garrity who died Jan. 3. She was 83.

A professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 56 years, the former Sister Austin Mary entered the congregation in 1953 and professed her first vows in 1956. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Neumann University, Aston, Pa., in 1972, and a master’s degree in educational management from Loyola University.

Sister Kathleen ministered primarily in education and parish ministry. She served for 13 years in the Trenton Diocese, having taught in Blessed Sacrament School, Trenton, from 1956-1957; St. Rose of Lima School, Freehold, from 1957-1961, and Corpus Christi School, Willingboro, from 1961-1969.

Other dioceses where Sister Kathleen served include for 11 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore; 11 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and seven years in the Diocese of Wilmington, Del. She was also a pastoral associate in two parishes in Florida and worked in St. Joseph Residence, Ringwood, as a driver for the sisters.

Sister Kathleen is survived by two brothers, several nieces and cousins and her Franciscan family.

Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Rd., Aston, Pa. 19014.
