Father Victor J. Mazza, who served as a weekend assistant in Precious Blood Church, Monmouth Beach, since 2012, died at his home in Highlands Sept. 14.

Funeral services will be held Sept. 18 in Precious Blood Church with a Rite of Reception beginning at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held until 7 p.m. at which time a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Precious Blood Parish is located at 72 Riverdale Ave.

Born in Newark in 1944 to Victor and Anna (Baduini) Mazza, Father Mazza studied in Seton Hall University, South Orange, and Conception Seminary, Conception, Mo. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Paterson in 1970.

Parishes where Father Mazza served in the Paterson Diocese included St. Brendan Parish, Clifton; St. Margaret Parish, Morristown; St. Vincent Parish, Madison, and St. Paul Parish, Clifton. He also served in Pope Pius High School, Passaic, and Bayley-Ellard Catholic High School, Madison.

On the diocesan level, Father Mazza on the Personnel Board from 1972-78; as Dean of the Clifton Deanery from 1993-2005, and on the Liturgical Commission from 2008-2010.

Father Mazza retired from active ministry in June, 2011, and became a weekend assistant in Precious Blood Parish, Monmouth Beach, in 2012.

He was predeceased by his parents and siblings Joan and John. Father Mazza is survived by his sisters, Dominican Sister Anne Victor and Agnes Ferrarelli, and brother, Fred (Marlene). He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews.  

In lieu of flowers, donations in Father Mazza’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
