Father McGeough honored by State DOC
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
On August 21, Vincentian Father Martin F. McGeough, was named “Volunteer of the Year, Central Reception and Assignment Facility” by Department of Corrections commissioner Gary M. Lanigan, on behalf of the State of New Jersey, Department of Corrections.
Father McGeough, who also visits the state correctional facilities of Jones Farm and Mid-State, reflected on this recognition, saying, “I learned early on that what the inmate population values is continuity and faithfulness. They appreciate the fact that people show up because, in many cases, they have been let down by important people in their lives.
“Never have I done anything where I’ve been thanked as much as I am by the men and women I see in prison. When I do this – when we do this – when we are willing to spend our time with them, we send a message that God has not abandoned you.”
Referring to Scripture, Father McGeough added, “The only person Jesus ever told ahead of time that he would be saved was a convicted criminal hanging on a cross next to him. There must be something that God loves about prisoners.”
