Father James Cammisa, a priest for 63 years, died Feb. 8, one day after celebrating his 99th birthday.

Funeral services will be held Feb. 16 in Christ the King Parish, Holy Trinity Church, 408 Prospect St., Long Branch. The Rite of the Reception of the Body will be at 9:30 a.m. Viewing hours will take place from 10 a.m. until his funeral Mass at noon. Msgr. Thomas N. Gervasio, diocesan vicar general, will be principal celebrant.

Father Cammisa was born in 1914 in Waterbury, Conn. He prepared for the priesthood in St. Bonaventure Seminary and Christ the King Seminary, both in Olean, N.Y. He was ordained a priest May 26, 1949, in St. Joseph Cathedral, Hartford, Conn., by Bishop Henry J. O’Brien and served in parishes in the Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses. As associate pastor, he was assigned to Blessed Sacrament Parish, Trenton; Our Lady of Mount Virgin Parish, New Brunswick; St. Philip and St. James Parish, Phillipsburg; Holy Trinity Parish, Long Branch; St. Ann, Raritan; St. Joachim, Trenton; St. Joseph, Beverly; and St. Agnes, Atlantic Highlands.

On Aug. 30, 1967, Father Cammisa was named pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Whitehouse Station.  According to Our Lady of Lourdes Parish records, the parish grew from approximately 500 to 800 families during his pastorate. Under his leadership, the parish developed a new religious education program. He also established a board to oversee the program, known as the Our Lady of Lourdes Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Advisory Council, which petitioned the school board to obtain use of classroom space at the Whitehouse Station school.

 In his dedication to serving the parish youth, Father Cammisa also formed a Catholic Youth Organization and a youth folk choir to provide music during parish liturgies. He was also responsible for overseeing more than $15,000 worth of renovations to the church, rectory and parish grounds, including a number of changes to comply with the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

After serving for 10 years as pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Father Cammisa retired in 1977. He was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus council in Long Branch.

Father Cammisa was predeceased by his parents, one sister and five brothers.

He is survived by a brother, Romeo Cammisa of Delmar, N.Y. and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury, Conn.
