July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
Emil “Em” Schroth III, 58 of Interlaken, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch surrounded by his family. Em was born at Jersey Shore Medical Center to Emil and Janet (Carton) Schroth and lived with his loving parents in Interlaken his entire life.
Em was quadriplegic, born with cerebral palsy and attended the adult program of the Schroth Center in Ocean Township. He was a tireless advocate and spokesperson for those with disabilities, and would speak to different groups on the subject of living with a disability. Em addressed the crowd at the 11th Annual Catholic Men for Jesus Rally in March 2008, speaking about the gift of salvation. Using a device that allowed him to speak, Em shared his beliefs about duty and responsibility in life.
Em is remembered by his loved ones as having lived his life with great humor and dignity. His infec¬tious smile and winning personality made him a treasured friend to all. By example, he encouraged all he met to show compassion to others. He loved the Jersey Shore and cherished his days on Takanassee Beach.
“It doesn’t matter if you have a disability or not, no one gets a free ride in life,” Em would say.
Sometimes we think life is more bad than good, but that’s not true.”
He would also use a metaphor to describe his outlook on life: “I believe life is like a Christmas tree. If you’re good enough you’ll rise to the top, closer to the star.”
He, along with his parents, Emil and Janet Schroth, was a communicant of St. Michael Parish, West End. His father is a long-time member of the Finance Council of the Diocese of Trenton. Em was also the 2008 recipient of the Judith Stanley Coleman Award for Exceptional Service to the Community from the Visiting Nurse Association of Central New Jersey.
Surviving are his devoted parents, his sister, Missy Hislop and her husband, James Hislop of Summit, and their three children, Emily, Ryan and Allison.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 6 in St. Michael Church, West End. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Em may be made to the Schroth Center, 1701 Kneeley Blvd., Ocean Township, NJ 07712.
