Lourdes Health Foundation has chosen Moorestown resident Dr. Donald Petroski as one of two recipients of its 2015 Healing Spirit Award. The annual award honors a Lourdes physician for his or her compassion, dedication to patients and years of service. Dr. Petroski is the chief of gastroenterology in Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County, Willingboro, as well as the hospital’s past Chairman of Internal Medicine.
The 2015 award was presented to Dr. Petroski March 28 at the Lourdes Health Foundation’s annual fundraising gala and silent auction, “The Dance 2015 – Under The Tuscan Sky.” Proceeds from the event, which was held at Vie in Philadelphia, will benefit Lourdes community programs and services. Honorary chairpersons Drs. Amy and Glenn Articolo, and more than 400 regional medical and business leaders will be in attendance.
“I am honored to receive the Healing Spirit Award,” said Dr. Petroski, a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Moorestown. “I feel fortunate to help others. There are a lot of people struggling in the world and being a physician and active in the community allows me to help those most vulnerable.”
Dr. Petroski joined Lourdes as chief of Gastroenterology in 2011. He was with Brachfeld Medical Associates of Willingboro for 30 years, then with Cooper University Hospital as an associate professor of medicine.
Dr. Petroski earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and a medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College. He completed his internship and internal medicine residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, performed a fellowship in Liver Diseases at Yale School of Medicine, and a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Connecticut.
“I often tell my medical students and residents it’s critical they have the three As – be affable, approachable and available. If you listen to what a patient says, and they feel like they can come to you, it can result in better health for that patient because he or she will more likely comply with what they have to do.”
Dr. Petroski adds, “The relationships I have with my patients are very important to me. They come to me, asking for help when they are sick and worried. They show great courage. I value that and it’s my honor to treat them.”
Dr. Petroski is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology.
In addition to being a member of the Lourdes Health Foundation, Dr. Petroski served on the board of trustees and foundation board for the Burlington County YMCA, as a member of the Rotary International, and as part of the Honorary Commander’s Program for McGuire Air Force Base. In addition, he has served on numerous patient safety committees and frequently offers educational health sessions to the community.
Dr. Petroski has been named a Sister Elizabeth Corry Award nominee for “Commitment to Those in Need.”
Dr. Petroski enjoys spending time with his wife, three children and their spouses, and his six grandchildren.
