Distinguished honor bestowed on Bishop O'Connell

Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., returned to The Catholic University of America, Washington, Oct. 17 for the dedication of Father O'Connell Hall, a LEED-certified building that the university named in his honor. Among those from the Diocese who traveled to Washington with Bishop O’Connell for the ceremony included Deacon Jason Parzynski; Anthony Mingarino, diocesan chancellor and chief administrative officer; Father Jeffrey E. Lee, pastor of St. Mary Parish, Colts Neck, and Father Gerard S. Sloyan, who is now the oldest priest serving in the Diocese of Trenton.
Bishop O’Connell’s long affiliation with The Catholic University of America goes back to the 1980s he when pursued studies in canon law and obtained a licentiate in 1987 and then a doctorate in canon law in 1990. In 1998, then Father O’Connell was appointed the university’s president where he served for 12 years. His tenure as president ended upon his being named coadjutor bishop of the Trenton Diocese by Pope Benedict XVI on June 4, 2010.
