Following the Opening Mass, CYO athletic director Quincy Walzer announced last season’s “Male and Female Athletes of the Year” and “Coach of the Year” awards. Long time girls soccer coach Tony Reres took home the coach of the year honors for his many years at the helm of the Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony, Hamilton, soccer program. Reres is retiring this season since his youngest child is now of high school age.
Tyasia Lewis-El was selected as “CYO Female Athlete of the Year.” The Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, player led the league in scoring last year, guided her team to their undefeated first place trophy, and was named the regular season’s Most Valuable Player. During the playoffs, Lewis-El was named MVP when she and her teammates clinched the championship game, and was selected as CYO all-star MVP at season’s end. She also competed in the diocesan tournament in March as she helped TCA to reach the championship game.
The CYO “Male Athlete of the Year” award went to fellow TCA student Mascio Sexton. Sexton, a member of the TCA Blue boys varsity basketball team last year, led his team in scoring on their way to an undefeated first place finish in the large school division. TCA went on to win the championship with Sexton named the playoff MVP. The skilled hoopster helped his team win the diocesan tournament and was selected as a member of the CYO all-star basketball game at season’s end.
Following the Mass, a full slate of girls and boys varsity match-ups entertained the spectators. In the girls varsity division, Trenton Catholic Academy defeated Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony 32-17 with Imani Lewis leading TCA with 15 points; and St. Paul, Princeton, Gold defeated St. Raphael-Holy Angels, Hamilton, 14-13, Vicky Velez leading the St. Paul Gold girls with 9 points. The team from St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square, defeated St. Paul Blue by a score of 31-7; Tatiana Dorner of St. Gregory’s was top scorer on her team with 12 points.
On the boys’ ledger, St. Gregory’s White defeated OLS-St. Anthony in a squeaker by a score of 26-24, while St. Ann, Lawrenceville, defeated St. Raphael-Holy Angels Blue 44-10. Ryan Roman of St. Ann’s contributed 20 points to the total. St. Gregory’s Blue defeated St. Raphael-Holy Angels Gold with a tally of 41-29, while St. Paul Blue defeated St. Paul Gold 29-9.
