CBA boys track extends its championship streaks

For the Christian Brothers Academy boys’ track & field team, it was a matter of keeping championship streaks intact.

And the Colts did just that, convincingly. 

The Lincroft-based school won its eighth consecutive Shore Conference Championship meet and 15th overall May 16. Less than a week later, CBA claimed its  third straight NJSIAA Non-Public A sectional title and seventh overall May 21-22.

Mater Dei started a streak of its own, as the Seraphs won their second straight Non-Public B championship.

Here is a look at how the Diocese of Trenton schools made out in their respective county and state meets, with times being posted for winning events. The top six finishers at sectionals advance to this weekend’s Non-Public state meets on June 1-2. 

CBA

In the Shore Conference meet, CBA was led by its always outstanding distance team, along with a strong effort from thrower Dan Mead. The Colts earned 62 points, while Ocean Township was second with 44.

CBA took 1-2-4 the 3200 behind 1st-place Ryan Miele (9:46.11), Will Foley and David Ham. Will Huntley took third in the 1600, while Kent Anzano was fourth in the 800.  Mead won the discus with a throw of 168-11 and was second in the shot. 

The top six finishers in each event earned team points, as CBA also got contributions from Liam O’Hara (6th, 400 hurdles), Anthony Zamarra and Nicholas Morse (5th, 6th, discus), Mead and Morse (2nd, 4th, shot) and the 4th-place 4x400 team of Andrew Canale, Nathaniel Giallanza, Ethan Arce and, Rafael Coppola.

The Colts had two double-winners at the SJ A meet with Tim McInerney (800, 1:56.38; 1600, 4:16.62) and Mead (discus, 167-6; shot, 58-9), while Canale won the 400 (48.52) and the 4x800 team of Anzano, Andrew Thomson, John Sheridan and Huntley won in 8:07.13.

Second-place finishes came from Canale (200), Troy Hill (3200), O’Hara (400) and the 4x400 (Canale, Justin Cadas, Elijah Brown, Elijah Abraham).  Charles Ciraolo took third in high jump.

Also advancing by finishing 4-through-6 were O’Hara (400, 110 hurdles), Hill (1600), Tanner Crochet (3200), Mike Morris (3200), Miles Enstrom (400 hurdles), the 4x100 relay, Lars Enstrom (pole vault), Zamarra (discus, shot), Jack Lotosky (javelin)and Chris Arias (javelin). 

MATER DEI

Isaiah McClain took 4th in the Shore Conference long jump and was an outright weapon in the Non-Public B meet. The senior won the long jump (20-11.75) and high jump (6-0), while taking second in the 100 and third in the 200.

 The Middletown school easily outdistanced Wildwood Catholic with its 157 points. WC had 76

Mater Dei had  two triple-winners in John Spinelli and Patrick Osborn. Both were on the winning 4x800 team (8:34.23) along with Jake Roberts and John Meskin. Spinelli won the 1600 (4:38.94) and 3200 (9:54.77), while Osborn won the 800 (1:59.44) and 400 hurdles (58.54). 

Second-place finishers were Griffin Cole (110 hurdles), the 4x400 relay team (Joe Ramos, Sincere Sauders, John Meskin, Osborn), John Closs (high jump, 5-10), Atom Chaney (pole vault, 9-0) and Pat Gorman (shot). Checking in with thirds were Cole (400 hurdles), John Meskin (800) and the 4x100 team (Sauders, Cole, Ramos, Closs). 

Closs was fourth in the javelin, Ramos took fifth in the 400 and Jake Roberts was sixth in the 1600.

ST. ROSE

The Purple Roses of Belmar had two winners in the Non-Public B meet as Peter Jurlina took the javelin (141-2) and Christian Riozzi-Bodine (10-0) won the pole vault. Connor McKeown placed fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump, while Luke Remail was third in the 1600 and fifth in the 800.

Also advancing with top-six finishes were John O’Hearn with (110 hurdles), Declan McAtasney (discus), John O’Hearn (110 hurdles), the 4x800 (Remail, Sean Donohue, Jared Hewitt, Riozzi-Bodine), 4x400 (Michael Yuschak, Remail, O’Hearn, McKeown) and 4x100 (Evan Cantlon, Yuschak, Jurlina, O’Hearn).

NOTRE DAME

The Irish of Lawrenceville got a 3-5 finish in pole vault from Kevin McGowan and Dylan Sica and a 4-6 finish in javelin by Jeremiah Wilson and Paul Moyer in the Mercer County Meet. Ajani Owens was third in shot and Blake Stewart sixth in long jump. The 4x100 relay team of Blake Stewart, Pat Jones, Fynn Payer and Dominic Colter was fourth and the 4x400 team of Pat Jones, Payer, Eric Liedtka and Colter was sixth. 

In the Non-Public A meet, Sica and McGowan were 2-3 in pole vault, Liedtka fourth in 400 hurdles, Stewart fifth in long jump and sixth in triple jump and Matt Hill sixth in 110 hurdles. The 4x400 relay (Stewart, Pat Jones, Payer, Coleon Williams) was third, the 4x400 (Tim Jones, Payer, Liedtka, Williams) was fourth and the 4x800 relay (Teddy Janiec, Matt Reed, Jack Collins, Burns) was fourth.  

HOLY CROSS

William Nielsen threw 141-10 to win give the Lancers of Delran a first-place finisher at the Burlington County Patriot Division Championship, while Jonathan Malone took second in the same event. Miles Cook finished second in the long jump and triple jump, Colin Curtin was second in the 400 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles, Matt Ziemba  finished third in the 3200 and fifth in the 1600, Matt Felicia was fifth in the 3200 and Brian Beck took fourth in the shot.   

In the Non-Public B meet, Curtin advanced in two events by finishing third in the 110 hurdles and fourth in the 400 hurdles, while Cook took third in the triple jump, Malone fifth in javelin, Beck fifth in shot and Ziemba sixth in the 3200.

TRENTON CATHOLIC ACADEMY

Masfort Boima won the 110 hurdles (15.58) and Mohamed Diagouraga took the triple jump (44-7) for the Iron Mikes of Hamilton in the Non-Public B meet. Boima also advanced in the 400 hurdles (2nd), triple jump (4th) and long jump (19-7), while Diagouraga got through in the 110 hurdles (4th) and long jump (3rd).

DONOVAN CATHOLIC

Sprinter James Blivins took sixth in the 200 and fourth in the 100 in the Shore Conference meet for the Toms River school.

Blivins took finished in the 100 and sixth in the long jump at the Non-Public A meet, while Ian Knapp was fifth in the 200 and sixth in the 400. The 4x400 team of Oliver Nora, Cristiaan Dailey, Blivins and Knapp was fifth. 

RED BANK CATHOLIC

The Caseys 4x100 relay team of Alex DeAlto, Andrew Capro, Jaden Key and Mario Flego got through to the state meet with a 6th-place finish at sectionals. 

ST JOHN VIANNEY

Mel Gonzalez advanced to states with a fifth in the high jump.
