July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
To mark the closing of the Year of Faith in the Diocese of Trenton, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., encourages faithful of the diocese to attend a Mass that he will celebrate Nov. 23 at 4p.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton.
Pope Benedict XVI announced a Year of Faith, which began on Oct. 11, 2012 and continues until Nov. 24, which marks the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and the end of the Church’s liturgical calendar. The date of Oct. 11 was chosen, because it was the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council. The year also commemorated the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism The Year of Faith served as a time to “rediscover the journey of faith so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ,” Pope Benedict said in his apostolic letter, Porta Fidei.
The Trenton Diocese observed the Year of Faith with a number of commemorations on diocesan, parish and school levels. The highlight of the year was marked at its opening when Bishop O’Connell convened a Eucharistic Congress that was held Oct. 12-14 in the PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel. The congress drew a reported 20,000 women, men and children from throughout the diocese and beyond who took part in Masses, Eucharistic Adoration, concerts, prayer services, dramatic and cultural performances, spiritual talks and much more. (To read all about the Eucharistic Congress, visit The Monitor website at www.

Bishop O’Connell used The Monitor’s print edition and website to reach the faithful through writing a series of pastoral essays that explored several key areas and their impact on the new evangelization. They included: adult faith formation; Catholic education; parish religious education, and the transformation/conversion of culture.
All are invited to join Bishop O’Connell for the closing Mass of the Year of Faith in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. Priests of the diocese are welcome to concelebrate the Mass with the Bishop.
