Funeral services scheduled for Sister Kathryn Miller


Funeral services will be held Dec. 11 in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., for Franciscan Sister Kathryn Miller, who died Dec. 3. She was 98.

A professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 79 years, Sister Kathryn (formerly Sister Lillian Francis) entered the congregation in 1937 and professed her first vows in 1940. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa., and master of arts degree in education from The Catholic University of America, Washington.

Sister Kathryn ministered primarily in elementary education and also spent a number of years in congregational ministry on both provincial and congregational leadership teams.

Her service included 30 years in the Trenton Diocese during which she taught in St. Michael Orphanage, Hopewell; Holy Angels School, and St. Anthony High School, both Hamilton, and she was also principal of Blessed Sacrament School, Trenton. She served two terms of office – first as council member and then as provincial – in the former St. Anthony Province which was located in Trenton.

Sister Kathryn ministry also led her to serve for 35 years in the Philadelphia Archdiocese; 10 years in the Metuchen Diocese, as well as in schools in the Diocese of Allentown, Pa.

A wake service for Sister Kathryn will be held Dec. 11 at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston.

Sister Kathryn is survived by a sister, nieces, nephews and her Franciscan family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, Pa. 19014.
