In recognition of Mercy Sister Carole Mackenthun’s yearslong support of the Ugandan St. Kizito School community, a Mass, blessing and commissioning of the new Sister Carole Commons facility and other projects were presided over July 9 by Bishop Lawrence Mukasa of the Kasana-Luweero Diocese, Uganda, Africa.
A teacher for almost 60 years, much of that in St. Catharine School, Spring Lake, Sister Carole spent 20 years supporting the Trenton Diocese’s outreach to Uganda and forming her own project, Mission of Mercy, which helped raise funds and secure donors for a school, churches and a health clinic, with the aid of St. Catharine School and parish families.
Mass was concelebrated by Msgr. Vincent Mukiibi, diocesan Vicar General; Father John Mary Ssekalegga, diocesan education secretary; and program coordinator Father Pontian Ssonko.
The District of Nakaseke and the government of Uganda extended their appreciation to Sister Carole and the Brian and Joelle Kelly Family foundation for their support of St. Kizito’s School community to improve health and education of the students. Other projects commissioned include a paved campus access road, water systems, playfields for both girls and boys, and a dining complex for meals in a safe and more hygienic environment.
