A hallmark of the Catholic Church has long been its willingness to bring the light of faith to some of the most difficult challenges of the day. Most often that effort begins with the messages of the Gospel which are then communicated through the written teaching and preaching of the pope, bishops and other leaders.
The Monitor hasalways stood in service to the Church’s teaching ministry as it offers a faith response to the needs of the times. This is particularly demonstrated in The Monitor Magazine’s June issue, which reports on the recent writings of Pope Leo XIV and our own Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., on the subject of artificial intelligence. We encourage our readers to spend some time with this special coverage provided on this very complex and serious topic.
The new issue covers a range of significant challenges and initiatives that the Church works to address in light of Catholic Social Teaching. Look for reporting on national and local responses to such important topics as poverty, hunger, immigration policy and enforcement, domestic violence, prison ministry and school safety.
Always our most prolific writer, Bishop O’Connell reflects on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as the U.S. bishops prepare to consecrate the nation in its name. The Bishop also shares his thoughts on “America at 250: Our shared journey of faith and freedom,” in which he considers the ways that the Church and the nation exist side by side guided by many of the same values regarding the dignity of every human person.
Readers won’t want to miss the Ordination coverage of two men raised to the Order of Deacon on their path to becoming priests next year. The moving stories of Deacons Nicholas Alescio and Benedict Quiambao are captured in this special section commemorating this milestone.
