It was business as usual for Six Flags Great Adventure May 17. Thousands of visitors of all ages and walks of life converged on the ever-popular Jackson-based theme park.
But the way Dan Waddington sees it, all the attractions and distractions of the rides – coaster, water and otherwise – entertainment, food establishments, tchotchke stands and safari tours paled in comparison to the spirited, faith-filled energy of the more than 1,300 young people gathered for the 2026 New Jersey Catholic Youth Rally.

“There was a powerful sense of spirituality and reverence among our teens,” said Waddington, director of the diocesan Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. “The young Catholic Church of our state is alive and well.”
Highlights of this year’s rally included an opening ceremony in the Showcase Arena prepared by representatives from the Metuchen Diocese. Along with prayer, there was an energizing witness and musical presentation given by The Scally Brothers.
The young people spent the afternoon in the park, enjoying all that it had to offer. At 6 p.m., they gathered in the Batman Stunt Arena for the closing Mass celebrated by Father Martin O’Reilly, diocesan chaplain for youth and young adult ministries who was principal celebrant and homilist. Joining Father O’Reilly were priest concelebrants from other dioceses.
Music was provided by the Praise and Worship Band led by Deacon Gez Ford of St. David the King Parish, Princeton Junction, and comprised of music ministers from around the Diocese.
“It was special for the Diocese of Trenton to lead the liturgy this year,” Waddington said. “It is always an honor to lead the most important part of our day.”
