Funeral services will be held May 22 in St. Catherine of Siena Chapel in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Barbara McDermott who died May 18. She was 73.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Sister Barbara’s formal education included earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education at Georgian Court University, Lakewood, as well as a master’s degree in theology. Her longtime work in education included teaching second grade at Whiting Elementary School for 25 years. She also taught second grade religious education in St. Luke Parish, Toms River, for more than a decade.
Sister Barbara entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1999. She completed her novitiate at the House of Mercy in St. Louis and later ministered in McAuley School, North Plainfield. She went on to teach in St. Joseph School, Keyport, followed by an assignment in the Metuchen Diocese. In recent years she was part of St. Ann Parish, Keansburg, before relocating to McAuley Hall.
A wake service will begin at 9 a.m. with a Welcome Home service at 10. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
