A month dedicated to life
September 25, 2025 at 10:58 a.m.
October is recognized by the Catholic Church in the United States as Respect Life Month, with Respect Life Sunday being celebrated the first Sunday of the month – this year, on Oct. 5. This observation is an opportunity for Catholics and other people of good will to reflect on the dignity of life and to encourage advocacy in communities.
Bishops across the nation have led the way with Walking with Moms in Need, a United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ nationwide parish-based initiative, which marked its five-year anniversary in March. Honoring the protection of the unborn as well as the need to support mothers throughout pregnancy and parenting, the campaign “works to ensure that any woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, or parenting in difficult circumstances, can turn to her local Catholic Church and be connected with the resources she needs,” the website https://walkingwithmoms.com states. “Volunteers walk with moms throughout the motherhood journey, offering them authentic Christian friendship and ongoing support.”
To support Respect Life Month observances, the USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities provides materials to help Catholics understand and value the gift of human life and help build a culture that cherishes and protects it. Action guides and other materials to introduce pro-life advocacy – including prayer cards, webinars and infographics – may be downloaded, printed, and reproduced for free for use in parishes, schools or ministries. For materials, visit https://www.respectlife.org/respect-life-month.
