Making History

September 12, 2025 at 4:12 p.m.

From St. Dominic Church in Brick, where students took part in the celebration of two new saints, to Catholic school and religious education classrooms reopening across the Diocese, September is a time of grace, new beginnings and milestones especially for the youngest of the faithful.

This issue of The Monitor leads with the joyous canonizations of St. Carlo Acutis and St. Pier Giorgio Frassati. Their young witness to holiness continues to inspire Catholic families throughout the world — and especially here in our Diocese, where Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., celebrated a special Mass in St. Dominic Church, home to the diocesan Shrine of St. Carlo Acutis.

We also turn our attention to the start of a new academic year. Our Back to the Classroom section explores the many ways Catholic schools in Mercer, Burlington, Monmouth, and Ocean Counties are investing in academic innovation, faith formation and the physical spaces where students learn and grow.

With Catechetical Sunday approaching, we share insights from parish leaders, catechists, and diocesan staff who continue to support the vital work of passing on the faith to the next generation.

Other highlights you won’t want to miss:

  • In observance of September’s Suicide Prevention Month, Bishop O’Connell shares  Some thoughts on mental illness and the call to accompany those who suffer.
  • Special reports on the ongoing crisis in Gaza and responses to the Minnesota Catholic school shooting.
  • Celebrations shared by the Bishop and others with a number of parish communities, including the recent Blessing of the Ocean on the Feast of the Assumption; Feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta in Asbury Park;  the 10th anniversary of “Laudato Si’” and the Season of Creation.
  • Reporting on the Holy Innocents Society workshop: Walking Together in Hope with persons with disabilities and multiple events that focused on young adults’ faith.
  • A look ahead to the Mass for Life; Respect Life Month; Mount Carmel Guild Gala, and a workshop on the Byzantine Catholic Church
