By Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M.

Mindful of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' (USCCB) urgent declaration in 2023 that abortion would remain "a preeminent priority" for the Catholic Church in our country, I invite all the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Trenton to join together prayerfully on this national "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children."

"The vulnerability of the innocent child in the womb" makes such prayer an indispensable Catholic responsibility since, as the USCCB has declared, abortion "directly attacks our most vulnerable brothers and sisters and destroys more than a million lives per year in our country alone."

Remember the words of Pope St. John Paul II's 1995 encyclical "Evangelium Vitae:"

A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer.

Let all of us in our Diocese heed his words and join in fervent and impassioned prayer for the legal protection of unborn children here in our country and throughout the world.
