Parishes in the Diocese of Trenton have been asked to join parishes from throughout the country to participate in an optional collection in support of the Capital Campaign for Infrastructure Renewal of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, the weekend of Dec. 6-7 or on Dec. 8, which is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The request was made to all U.S. archdioceses and dioceses by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Proceeds will benefit the Shrine’s 60-year-old roofs, which need to be replaced, along with other significant maintenance issues.
In a letter to priests of the Diocese, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., said, “I respectfully ask you, if possible, to consider a second collection in your parish.”
“The Shrine is, after all, the national basilica shrine of our country, frequently referred to as ‘Mary’s House,’” wrote Bishop O’Connell.
