Department of Catholic Schools launches parent speaker series

September 23, 2024 at 10:24 a.m.

Ways in which parents can support their children’s educational journeys at all grade levels will be the focus of a two-part parent speaker series hosted by the diocesan Department of Catholic Schools.

The first presentation, “Building Stronger Readers,” will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at Notre Dame High School, 601 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville.

Dr. Gene Kerns, author of “Literacy Reframed,” will share research on how parents can support their children’s educational journeys. This session is tailored for parents of students in pre-K through fourth grade.

The second presentation, “Who Gets In and Why,” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at Red Bank Catholic High School, 112 Broad St., Red Bank. New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Selingo will address parents of students in grades 6 through 11, discussing changes in the college admission process.

Both presentations are free and open to all parents. The discussions will also be presented to school principals the following day.

“As we researched topics for school leaders, it became evident that offering a parent component would benefit both parents and principals,” said Bonnie Milecki, assistant superintendent of school development and operations. “Rather than have each principal host individual parent meetings, we decided to share this information as a Diocese and open it to all parents. Parents are the primary educators of their children, and the Department of Catholic Schools is proud to support both schools and parents with this opportunity.” Those interested in attending the first presentation are asked to register HERE.
