To honor the Blessed Mother and pray for her assistance in defending life at all stages, the Knights of Columbus Council 335 will sponsor a Silver Rose Rosary and Consecration Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, Long Branch.

“We want to promote devotion to Our Lady,” said David Donegan, Knights of Columbus advocate at the council. “We need her to guide and intercede for us.”

The program will include Marian hymns, prayer, the recitation of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, Scriptural readings, a homily, a Litany to Mary and a final blessing. Donegan said the event will be bilingual, with certain readings and prayers in both English and Spanish.

“We have a large Spanish community and our pastor, Father Javier Diaz, is very supportive,” he said.

Donegan noted the event was slated to fall after the recent National Eucharistic Congress and before the Trenton Diocese’s hosting of the Sept. 26 March for Life and Mass for Life at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption.

According to the Knights of Columbus, the journey of the Silver Rose begins each year in March and ends Dec. 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. During that time, Silver Roses travel from town to town along eight routes throughout North America; several of the routes begin in Canada and end in Mexico.

The Silver Rose Program began in 1960, when the first rose – a real, live one – was blessed by a bishop in Ontario. The rose then traveled to New York and onto Texas, where it was taken across the border into Mexico. The rose ended its pilgrimage at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey Dec. 12.

To better ensure future annual trips, a silver rose was made. Today, due to the popularity of the program throughout the North American continent, eight silver roses travel unique routes. This year, the Silver Rose will be traveling throughout New Jersey churches from mid-September until mid-October.

„Our Lady Star of the Sea Church is located at 101 Chelsea Ave., Long Branch.

„St. Anselm Parish, 1028 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, is slated to host the Silver Rose program Sept. 30.
