In advance of U.S. elections, St. Rose Parish invites all to take part in Call to Unity

During the final week prior to the U.S. elections, Msgr. Edward Arnister, pastor of St. Rose Parish, Belmar, announced the release of a Call to Unity project created by his community’s Peace and Justice Ministry, and invited all people of prayer and good will to take part.
The initiative, which has been shared out across the parish’s digital and social media sites, features a 10-minute prayer and reflection video, along with a message encouraging voters to focus on what Catholic social teaching calls for during the challenges brought about by the presidential race.
In sharing the video with The Monitor, Msgr. Arnister explained, “We hope parishioners and everyone will take the time to stop and pray for the upcoming elections ... to pray for unity in our world, our country, our families. It is an understatement to say that people are stressed out by the elections; hopefully people will take the time to spend some moments in PRAYER before Tuesday. This was the objective of our little project!”
In its message introducing the video, the Peace and Justice Ministry described the 2024 political season as “the largest global election year in history, during a time of increased polarization, misinformation, armed conflict, and the climate crisis.”
The message continued, “We are encouraged by our Bishops and their guidelines as written in the Catholic Catechism on responsible voting: Citizens are obligated to contribute to the common good of society. It is the duty of citizens to contribute along with the civil authorities to the good of society in a spirit of truth, justice, solidarity, and freedom. Pope Francis encourages us, saying, ‘Elections are an essential moment in the life of any country, since they allow all citizens to take responsibility to choose their leaders.’
“We are inviting all parishioners to join in prayer and intention for UNITY to make this election about peace, and to transcend misinformation, polarization, and division. Let us pray that we can recognize the reality of our interconnectedness and interdependence and make our voting decisions for the ‘common good.’”
The message concludes with an invitation for individuals – at their own convenience -- to sign on to the video and “pray for unity and peace in our families, our church, our country, and our world. Led by Msgr. Arnister and St. Joseph Sister Jeanette Weychert, the video will be available at website: www.strosebelmar.com.
