Francis House of Prayer, Allentown, marked its fifth decade of ministry with staff members, friends and supporters gathering for a Mass celebrated June 9 by Bishop David M. O’Connell C.M.

Francis House was established by the Diocese as a house of prayer in June 1974. And while the retreat house has been served by a number of directors, since 1992 it has been under the capable charge of Sister of St. Joseph Marcella Springer, and the assistance of many devoted volunteers who help with office work, maintaining the grounds, shrubbery and flowers, cleaning the facilities and other responsibilities.

“For 50 years, St. Francis House of Prayer has been the holy ground that we and so many others have approached for those very things: for renewal, for peace of mind and heart, for the strength we need to experience God and share his love and presence with others through prayer and contemplation; for the support that faith alone can provide; for rest; for something to take away!” Bishop O’Connell said in his homily.
