Embracing the Ordinary

Welcome back to the beautiful rhythm of the liturgical calendar! As we bid farewell to the joyful celebrations of Easter and Pentecost, we find ourselves stepping into a season known as Ordinary Time. But wait, don’t let the name fool you! There’s nothing “ordinary” about this time in the Church’s calendar. Let’s explore what Ordinary Time is all about and how we can embrace its richness in our lives.
So, what exactly is Ordinary Time? Contrary to what the name might suggest, it doesn’t mean mundane or average. Instead, Ordinary Time comes from the Latin word “ordinalis,” meaning numbered or ordered. It’s a period of growth, reflection, and living out the Christian faith in our daily lives. Ordinary Time is divided into two segments: one following Christmas and Epiphany, and the other following Pentecost. During these times, we delve into the teachings of Christ, His miracles, and His mission on earth.
One of the beautiful aspects of Ordinary Time is the opportunity it provides us to dive deep into the Gospel readings at Mass. Each week, we encounter different passages from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. These readings aren’t just stories from the past; they’re living words that speak to us in our present circumstances. We can take time to reflect on how Jesus’ message applies to our lives today, guiding us in our relationships, decisions, and struggles.
Growing in Faith
Ordinary Time is like a spiritual greenhouse where we can nurture and grow in our faith. It’s a time for prayer, study, and deepening our relationship with God. As we navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life, we can find solace and strength in our faith. Whether it’s through attending Mass, participating in youth group activities, or engaging in personal prayer, we can seize this opportunity to grow closer to God.
But faith isn’t just something we keep to ourselves; it’s meant to be lived out in our daily lives. Ordinary Time challenges us to be disciples of Christ in the world, to love and serve others as He did. As teens, we can be shining examples of God’s love and mercy to our peers, our families, and our communities. Whether it’s volunteering, standing up for justice, or simply being kind to those around us, let’s strive to make a positive difference in the world.
So, as we enter back into Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar, let’s embrace the opportunity it offers us. Let’s delve into the richness of the Gospel, grow in our faith, and live out our beliefs with courage and conviction. Remember, there’s nothing ordinary about being a disciple of Christ!
