Remembering Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
January 10, 2023 at 4:50 p.m.
The January issue of The Monitor Magazine features special reporting on the life and legacy of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI as the Church around the world mourned his death on Dec. 31, 2022.
Amid the torrent of universal reporting that has been published since the news broke, The Monitor has curated special content to help readers get to know more about the late retired pope, including an extended biography of his long and impactful ministry as a priest, cardinal and pope, as well as a compilation of some of his many compelling statements and messages, and coverage of his funeral services in Rome. We especially call your attention to the homily text delivered by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., for the Diocese of Trenton’s Memorial Mass for Pope Benedict, and a full report on that Mass, which was attended by hundreds and seen by thousands more via livestream.
We also share a package of Bishop O’Connell’s reflections and favorite photos he had taken with the Holy Father on some of the many occasions he spent time with him.
While content about Pope Benedict pre-empted much of the customary Christmas and New Year content in this issue, we do point you to coverage of Bishop O’Connell’s Christmas Eve Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, and Christmas morning Mass celebrated with Catholic residents of New Jersey State Prison in Trenton. A sampling of local stories also depict some of the many ways that our people and parishes shared joy and faith with others in the celebration of Christmas. We hope that you will drop in to TrentonMonitor.com to see some of the beautiful Christmas photos and other content that could not be included in this issue.
Other content not to miss:
A preview of Catholic Schools Week, which will unfold around the Diocese beginning Jan. 29.
Information on upcoming diocesan events, including the Standing Together for Life Mass and Seminar, Jan. 20; Rachel’s Vineyard retreat for those in need of post-abortion healing, Feb. 3-5; a workshop with Steve Angrisano for all involved in parish music ministry, Feb. 3, and an Art of Catechesis course, offered virtually in February.
Columns on Scripture; recognizing the God-taps in our lives; dealing with the challenge when not all family members are Catholic.
