In a letter dated Sept. 8, 2022, Sean L. Callahan, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, extended thanks for the “generous donation” of $8,810.92 toward the agency’s Operation Rice Bowl collection.
The CRS Rice Bowl program, run annually during the season of Lent since 1975, benefits those in need both abroad and domestically. While 75 percent of the Rice Bowl collection supports CRS’s relief around the world in more than 100 different countries per year, 25 percent of funds stay in each U.S. diocese, aiding hunger and poverty alleviation efforts.
Earlier this year, the Diocese made generous contributions to other CRS relief efforts including $149,968.13 for CRS’ annual collection held March 26-27 and $72,250.60 for the collection CRS took up to assist the people of Ukraine earlier this year.
“I am humbled by your generosity and inspired by your compassion,” Callahan stated. ”Your kindness is the very embodiment of Jesus’ teachings to care for our most needy brothers and sisters and is recognized by the Lord.
“Thank you for living your faith and answering the prayers of so many,” Callahan said.
The Diocese also received acknowledgment for its $91,161 donation to the 2022 Catholic Home Missions Appeal Collection held April 23-24.
Home mission dioceses are those dioceses in the United States, its territories, and former territories that cannot provide basic pastoral services without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass, the Sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and laypeople. Currently, nearly 40 percent of dioceses in United States and its territories are considered home missions.
