Workshop offers tools for effective teaching on the Sacrament of Confirmation

“The Sacrament of Confirmation is not a right of passage and it is not Catholic graduation. The Sacrament of Confirmation is about living the life of Jesus Christ in the world.”

So said Colin MacIver to the more than 130 parish catechetical leaders and catechists who are involved with preparing young people to receive the Sacrament Confirmation during a daylong workshop Nov. 5 in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold.

The workshop, hosted by the diocesan Departments of Catechesis and Youth Ministry, featured MacIver who based his five-part presentation on his book, “The Catechist’s Field Guide to Confirmation,” that was published in 2020 by Ascension Press. In his talks, MacIver reviewed what the Sacrament of Confirmation is; the five stages of an effective Confirmation experience; the art of Confirmation preparation, and gave tools for effective classroom management and the use of technology.

The importance of the workshop, according to Denise Contino, director of the Department of Catechesis was to bring the group together “to provide them with a sense that they are from a large community of catechists that have the same goal to prepare candidates for an encounter with Jesus.

“This day gave them the opportunity to come together as catechists and brainstorm new ideas on how to reach the young people preparing for Confirmation,” Contino said.
