If the anticipated Supreme Court ruling on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization is handed down in late June or early July, and Roe v. Wade is overturned, the next step will be to plan for the future in this new reality.

The next steps will be the focus of a webinar hosted by the New Jersey Catholic Conference, set for July 14 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Entitled “The Dobbs Decision: Where do we go from here?” the webinar will feature a panel discussion among experts in moral theology, respect life initiatives and legal issues regarding abortion in the post-Dobbs world, and offer suggestions on how parishes can work to promote a culture of life.

As reported by Catholic News Service, the Dobbs case involves a Mississippi law banning abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy. An initial draft of a Supreme Court opinion in the case that was leaked May 2 indicated the high court is set to overturn its Roe v. Wade decision, which 50 years ago legalized abortion nationwide.

The Court also is expected to overturn its 1992 ruling in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which affirmed Roe and prohibited regulations that created an "undue burden" on women seeking an abortion.

If the final ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization overturns Roe and Casey, the issue of abortion would be returned to the states. In January, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed into law the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act, which codifies women’s access to abortion in the state.

The NJCC encourages members of the Catholic community to take part, and will provide more information on the speakers and registration details as they become available.

The NJCC has also compiled a list of resources for helping pregnant women and families in need. You will find the information at njcatholic.org/help-for-moms.
