A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 23 in St. Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, for Filippini Sister Dolores Potkay, who died June 19. She was 83.

Born in Trenton, Sister Dolores was a parishioner of Holy Cross Parish (now part of Sacred Heart Parish) and attended Villa Victoria Academy, Ewing, on full academic scholarship, graduating in 1956 as valedictorian. She entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1957, receiving the habit in 1958 and making her religious profession in 1961.

Attending College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, Sister Dolores earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, and subsequently earned a master of science degree in mathematics from Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind., and a master of arts degree in religious education from LaSalle University, Phila.

In 63 years of religious life, Sister Dolores was missioned in six dioceses. In the Diocese of Trenton, Sister Dolores ministered at Villa Victoria Academy, where she served as classroom teacher from 1971-1975, principal from 1984-1985, and taught again from 2004-2011. Due to declining health, Sister Dolores retired in 2013 to St. Joseph Hall Infirmary, Villa Walsh.

Sister Dolores was one of four children. She is survived by her brother Raymond, her sister-in-law, Ursula, and their family. She is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Helen (Rafalowski) Potkay, and her sisters, Caroline and Mary Potkay.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Religious Teachers Filippini, c/o Sister Patricia Pompa, Villa Walsh, 455 Western Ave., Morristown, NJ 07960.
